TRIATHLON TO TAKE CAPITAL BY STORM
Corus, British Triathlon's premier sponsor, has announced the launch of the Corus Elite Series, a three race series, which will include an event on July 22nd in London’s Hyde Park, the triathlon site of the 2012 Olympics. The event will see the debut of a new ‘eliminator’ super-sprint race format.
Current Elite World Champion Tim Don and Under 23 World Champion Will Clarke are expected to lead the British contingency throughout the Series. The women’s competition will see British National Champion Helen Tucker’s return to racing in the UK, after a heel injury in late 2006. Team-mate Vanessa Raw will also be flying the British flag against the World’s elite.
The super-sprint format in Hyde Park will see both the men's and women's races be contested over two heats,with the top 20 from each preliminary round entering the final showdown. The 300m swim will start in the Serpentine before the athletes exit for the 7km bike leg, consisting of two 3.5km laps of the Park,will be a flat, high speed course for the competitors. To provide a super-charged finish for spectators, the 2km run will be a double 1km loop, finishing opposite the Lido.
