Canterbury's IonX
Canterbury of New Zealand have developed a product over the last three years called IonX, in conjunction with scientists at Loughborough University, that has already caused a stir in world rugby. The shirts (worn by Australia, South Africa, Ireland, Scotland and Japan, as well as by England internationals Phil Vickery, Andrew Sheridan and Matt Stevens) are coated with an IonX liquid wash that, when it comes into contact with the skin, delivers ionic energy to the body through a negatively charged electromagnetic field.
It’s the first time a sports clothing product has had such a direct, tangible effect on the level of performance and rate of recovery. The Ionised Energy Fabric stimulates the flow of oxygen-enriched blood to bring more energy to the muscles resulting in a 2.7% increase in power output, speed, strength and recovery. The improvement in blood flow also flushes out waste products such as lactic acid – which remains in the muscles after an intense workout such as playing in a rugby match – quickening the body’s recovery for the next game or training session.
IonX is available in both Hot and Cold garments which combine the original benefits of the Canterbury BaseLayer range with their new Ionised Energy Fabric. The Cold garments are designed to insulate athletes in the coldest of climates ensuring maximum performance for skiers and boarders alike, whilst the Hot garments keep athletes cool in hot conditions. Designed to be worn close to the skin, all IonX BaseLayer products are skin-tight yet flexible, offering full freedom of movement for the athlete. With an anti-bacterial layer completing the line-up, your gear will not only offer performance in the extremes but will also come out smelling fresh.
The entire range incorporates Canterbury 's moisture transport system which enables the 'wicking' of sweat away from the skin to the outer surface of the fabric and away from the body. The result is a moisture free garment that speeds up muscle recovery during high intensity activity.
As a result, South Africa (wearing the IonX kit and with star winger Bryan Habana one of many members of the the team endorsing the IonX BaseLayer as well) walked away with the title. The technology can also be seen on world number 3 golfer Jim Furyk, as well as in the playing kits of Portsmouth FC.
