SGB Sports and Outdoors - December

One thing that has struck me since taking the reins here is that the time was, serendipitously enough, perfect for combining the SGB Sports and SGB Outdoor brands. So many shops are enjoying a crossover of the two, in small but significant ways. After all, even a specialist running shop could benefit from trail running shoes, and with that comes the potential to upsell all manner of more 'outdoorsy' gear, even down to flasks and hats.

In other news, I recently completed the Las Vegas half marathon for UK anti-bullying charity Kidscape (www.kidscape.org.uk) - if you'd like to donate, you can do so online at www.justgiving.com/bruford. This was achieved with the kind support and assistance of Saucony and Ronhill, to whom I am especially grateful. Sadly, the run was marred by injury, but I still finished, hobbling the last five miles. I'd like to say it was the taking part that counted... In this instance, it certainly was – at the time of going to press, approximately £1000 has been raised, and donations can be made online up to February.

After the race, I got married, but that's another story.

Back to SGB; the magazine will be changing significantly in the next couple of issues, across the January and February editions. It will mean more pages for real features across both the sports and outdoor sections – more of what you want to read about. Keep an eye out for it and please, feel free to share your opinions with me at jonbruford@yahoo.co.uk or on 01584 877177.

In the meantime, enjoy the holiday period and I hope you all hear festive bells – well, perhaps the chiming of opening tills would be best. Happy holidays.
