Grisport goes green
Boots made by Grisport - one of Italy's leading producers of trekking and safety footwear - are about to become the greenest in the world.
The installation of more than 10,000 solar panels - at a cost of €8M - at the company's factory in the Dolomite region is nearing completion and it's hoped that first boots produced by sustainable energy will be on sale in the UK by the end of this summer.
Martin Rye, Director of GRS Footwear which has the sole UK distribution rights for Grisport, said Grisport's aim was to have an ‘electricity-free' factory within ten years.
"There's no-one else in the outdoor shoe market and maybe not in any division of the industry that uses solar power to produce all their products," he added.
Grisport's solar panels will produce 1.4 megawatts of power which, if created by traditional resources (coal/petrol/oil), would result in 48 tonnes of toxic waste over 20 years and 1,000 tons of co2 per annum released into the atmosphere.
Said Martin: "Grisport boots are already one of the most popular brands among hikers because of their lightweight construction and Italian design but we really feel that this decision to convert to sustainable energy will make them even more attractive to a market sector that loves the countryside and is keen to support those working to protect and safeguard that environment."
