The North Face to Sponsor 2006 Bouldering World Cup

The Bouldering World Cup will be sponsored for the fourth year running by The North Face.

The 2006 event is the first in the World Cup series and is being held at the NEC in Birmingham from 17-19 March. It will take place during the Outdoors Show, the biggest consumer show in the UK with over 50,000 visitors. 2006 will stage the fullest ever World Cup with 10 events planned around the world taking place in locations as diverse as Russia, Madagascar and Malaysia.

Since it’s inception in 1999 the Bouldering World Cup has increased enormously in popularity. 2005 saw a 50% increase in numbers of participants over the previous year and it is expected that up to 100 competitors from 15 different nationalities will be competing next year. It is hoped to run a ‘Dyno’ competition at the same time as the bouldering, due to its incredible popularity in 2005.

Bouldering is seen as the purest form of climbing with no restrictions from equipment such as ropes. Each climb has a time restriction, making this athletic event an enthralling spectator sport. The boulders will be purpose-built by Entreprises and designed in conjunction with internationally qualified route setters.

Keith Byrne, Marketing Manager or The North Face comments, "This international competition has gone from strength to strength over the last few years, as can be seen by the increasing numbers of participants from all over the world and the huge crowds that it attracts. The North Face is proud to continue supporting such a vibrant, high quality sporting event".

Male and female qualifications will take place on the Friday and Saturday, followed by semi finals on Sunday morning and the finals on Sunday afternoon.
