The Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI), in-conjunction with the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES), visited leading sports science universities across the UK in November, presenting the latest developments in sports science nutrition to students and faculty staff.

Dr Jeff Zachwieja, Research Fellow and leading GSSI scientist, lead the session with his presentation: ‘Nutrition for Muscle Function During and After Exercise.' The GSSI tour included visits to Leeds Metropolitan University, Sheffield Hallam University, the University of Birmingham, St Mary's College University, Brunel University and the University of Bath.

Commenting on the visits Dr Zachwieja said: "The tour was a huge success as it gave us the opportunity to interact directly with the future leaders in sports science. It was great to visit so many leading sports science departments and to see the work that is being undertaken in the UK."

Dr José González-Alonso, Professor of Sports and Exercise Physiology at Brunel University, said: "The science of fluid, salt and sugar replacement during and after exercise has advanced tremendously in the last two decades. The Gatorade Sports Science Institute has provided a major impetus in this development by focusing on scientific-based evidence. In his recent open lecture at the Brunel University, Dr Zachwieja enthused an ample audience of students and staff with his presentation highlighting past and current research underpinning the formulation of the optimal sport drink for exercise and recovery. The critical analysis of the available literature and the discussion of still unknown questions such as the requirements of fluid replacement in cold environments were particularly appreciated
