I can hardly believe it’s May already; the year seems to have flown by doesn’t it? Certainly when I started in this role in January, the National Independent Sports Trade Exhibition seemed a long way off. As its media partner, the team at SGB UK have obviously been very excited about the prospect of a show aimed specifically at the independent retailer.
NISTEX is taking place at Cranmore Park on June 22 so if you don’t yet have a ticket please contact Roger Bourne at SGBUK@datateam.co.uk to avoid missing out. I am also pleased to introduce a new regular feature this month – Retail Spotlight – in which we give the independent retailer a voice. Peter Ludgate, director of Hubble and Freeman, Maidstone, was more than happy to talk to us. Peter certainly has strong views on the industry – he doesn’t hold back in saying what he thinks – but it is exactly this kind of passion that keeps the independent sports trade alive. Also this month, we bring you in touch with major British running brand, Ronhill. Mike Deegan, director of the OSC Group, spoke to me with refreshing honesty about the brand’s highs and lows. Here is a company that wholeheartedly admits that by becoming complacent, it allowed itself to be overtaken in the marketplace.
