The logo for the Olympics has caused quite some controversy, and it’s not hard to see why. A lot of public money has been spent on this confusing collection of shapes. Apparently it says something about democracy, yet despite the uproar a re-design seems to be out of the question.

For symbolism to work, history suggests that the design be kept simple. Check out the Nike swoosh, the adidas three stripes or the Lacoste crocodile - all now synonymous with the brand.

Will we really be able to say ‘oh yes the Olympics’ when we see the image without the words emblazoned across it in years to come? And if we do remember at all, will it not merely be because of the controversy it evoked?

I would be really keen to find out what you think of the logo and the furore surrounding it. Send me an email at rknowles@datateam.co.uk and have your say.

Thanks

Becci
