Canterbury Europe folds, but buyers wait in wings

Canterbury Europe, which had suffered well-documented delivery problems in the last few years, has gone into administration. This affects a large number of sporting clubs, including Premier League Portsmouth FC, Yorkshire Cricket Club, London Wasps and Leinster RFC.

KPMG, acting as administrators, have said that all contracts with clubs have been cancelled under the terms of its administration. The clubs now become unsecured creditors in terms of monies owed.

The firm's collapse comes with the loss of 72 jobs, though KPMG say they will continue trading with a staff of 14 until a buyer is found. The administrators have not yet explained how any company can continue trading at a reasonable level when its staff is cut by more than 80 per cent.

Rumours in the north-west have sprung up suggesting that JD Sports Fashion are interested in purchasing Canterbury. This comes shortly after JD was rumoured to be in the market for KooGa, which is part-owned by retail rivals JJB Sports.
