"I was in charge of our first appearance at an International Triathlon Union World Series event as official compression wear partner. It's a prestigious and important link for Skins, so the heat was definitely ‘on'.
The event was in Madrid, but the custom-built stand - 2 tonnes of it - was 2,500 miles away in Germany. Moreover, I hadn't seen it in action, hadn't met our new Spanish distributors (who were going to man it), didn't speak the lingo and immediately struggled to find a member of staff with the correct driving licence for it. On top of all that, I had less than four weeks to sort it all out.
Luckily, a driver was located...but things started to get sticky driving a massive trailer through the city centre during a 30-degree Friday lunchtime. We eventually found the location (directions courtesy the local street walkers) and arrived all hot and bothered thinking we were late, only to find out we were actually (a) first and (b) completely on our own. Siesta-time, anyone?
Eventually the organisers appeared through the haze and we breathed a little easier...but were then greeted by a bemused "Que?" and shoulder-shrugging. They apparently had no idea we were arriving and hadn't allocated any space!
Normally, this is where I go into angry Englishman mode, but for some reason I decided to remain calm. Instead, I asked if we could park ‘for a few hours' while we sorted our departure out - knowing full well that once off the trailer, the stand couldn't be moved anywhere. And by the time the event starts, the tills are ringing and the organizers eventually find our documentation... Cool."
