Sports Direct raided by OFT
Following reports that JJB Sports ‘blew the whistle' to the Office of Fair Trading over alleged cartel activity involving the sale of sports goods, Sports Direct's headquarters in Shirebrook were reportedly raided as part of the inquiry.
JJB approached the OFT in January about a "suspected agreement or concerted practice to dampen competition in the sports retail market", which it alleged took place between summer 2007 and March 2009.
JJB has been given immunity from financial penalties (which can be up to 10 per cent of turnover) by the OFT in exchange for full co-operation in its investigation.
The complex relationship between the JJB and Sports Direct means any investigation is likely to drag on for some time; the relationship has been strained over recent months after Sir David Jones ended the trading agreement the organisations had. The investigation relates to a period when Chris Ronnie held the reins at JJB.
