Base Layers
Base layers have rapidly moved from being a novelty item in stores to being an absolute essential, respected by amateur athletes as genuine performance gear that fulfils, in most cases, a very specific role in their sporting love affair. Compression base layers can aid recovery, for example, and so are very popular among runners or athletes whose base training involves plenty of running; with this in mind, retailers can confidently promote compression gear to footballers, rugby players, even cyclists.
‘Regular' base layers are used in every day life by many people, not just sports enthusiasts. It's becoming an accepted form of ‘underwear' that's being adopted by more and more people; sports retailers can be right at the forefront of this growing awareness, as most traditional clothing shops are yet to stock anything like a skintight base layer. Don't just sit base layers in boxes up on a shelf - invest in a body, get them out of the box so people can feel the fabric, and see how far things have come since wearing lumpy old thermals in days gone by. Also, consider stocking more than one brand of base layer - get two or even three in, at different price points, with an entry-level product, mid-range and something a bit special at the top end.
