Tiger’s stock continues to fall
In a survey to discover who were seen to be UK sport’s best and worst role models in 2009, a seemingly invincible David Beckham topped the list of good guys (although he features on both lists), while Tiger Woods rose to the top of the list of bad guys … or should that be ‘sunk’?
The survey was commissioned by SkillsActive, the government Sector Skills Council for Active Leisure and Learning, to support a new diploma in Sport and Active Leisure being launched this year.
The full top-10s read as follows:
The survey, which was conducted in December by Opinion Matters and incorporates the opinions of 1,363 British adults (over the age of 14), is particularly relevant to SkillsActive’s new diploma, as the curriculum includes a module on teaching students how to be good sporting role models.
“Whether they like it or not, successful sportspeople are role models to young people around the world,” says Stephen Studd, chief executive of SkillsActive. “Sadly there will always be those who abuse their high profile position but on the whole we believe it is entirely possible to teach young sportspeople with bright futures how to be a good role model. The Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure which commences in September will aim to do just this.”
