New branded product licences to unlock the potential of Super League for retailers

Sports licensing firm CPLG Sports said it is planning to sign up a number of licensees offering Engage Super League-branded products to allow retailers to cash in on the growing popularity of Rugby League.

Engage Super League is the elite division for Rugby League in Europe featuring teams from northern England, London, Wales and France, including Wigan Warriors, St Helens, Hull Kingston Rovers, Leeds Rhinos, Harlequins Rugby League and Catalans Dragons.

The 14 teams in the league play a 27-round summer season of fixtures, culminating in an eight-team play-off series. This results in an annual Grand Final played at Old Trafford, Manchester, with Wigan beating St Helens in front of 70,000-plus fans in the 2010 Grand Final.

CPLG Sport said the competition has seen attendances grow year-on-year since 2001, and is now a valuable brand in the sporting goods marketplace.

CPLG Sport has recently signed up three new licensees to offer Engage Super League-branded products, including jewellery and celebration cakes. Although these products will not be made available through the sports retail market, a CPLG Sports spokesperson said: “We have plans to sign up further licensees whose products will be suitable for sports retailers.”

CPLG Sports commercial manager Gary Jacobsen said: “The brand is increasing in popularity all the time and this is reflected in the ongoing interest we are receiving from the licensing community.”
