Sports Traider opens in Luton to provide access to specialist equipment at affordable price

A third Sport Traider store has opened its doors in Luton with the aim of encouraging local people back into sports through the recycling of old and unwanted equipment.

The Active Luton Sports Traider store will take unwanted sports kit, such as out-grown trainers and boots, lost property and old equipment, clean and wash it, and then resell it an affordable price to the community.

Other Sports Traider stores are located in Bedford and Leicester.

Active Luton Sports Traider will also offer new items alongside second-hand goods thanks to support from brands such as Nike and Adidas, who have donated end of line stock items. John Lewis has also assisted with the shop design and fit, and will be setting up the window displays.

Sports Traider aims to encourage youngsters to take-up sports by making specialist clothing and equipment affordable to them which would otherwise be an ‘inaccessible luxury’.

Active Luton is a not-for-profit distributing sport and leisure trust, which is responsible for all the public leisure facilities across Luton, and for promoting well-being, healthy living and fitness to local people.  Any profit made by Active Luton Sports Traider will be re-invested back into supporting local sporting activities.

The Luton Sports Traider store was opened on November 16 by Mayor of Luton Tom Shaw (pictured, centre), supported by ex-Luton Town player Kingsley Black and current players Amari Morgan-Smith and Shane Blackett. Dru Spinks, former captain of the Marshall Milton Keynes Lions basketball team, was also on hand.

“We are keen to encourage as many local people as possible to support Active Luton Sports Traider,” said Helen Barnett, chief executive of Active Luton.

“Whether that is through buying sports equipment here, or by donating old and unwanted equipment; either way it will definitely be appreciated.”
