FA approves new NFC, a move that will being benefits to sports retailers active in local communities

The FA Board has given its full approval to St George’s Park in Burton-on-Trent, the National Football Centre.

Building work on St George’s Park will begin next month, with completion due in summer 2012.

The FA said St George’s Park will provide ‘top-class education for future generations of English football coaches’. It will also act as a sports medicine and performance research centre, and a training home to enhance international team development.

Both The FA’s Professional and National Game Boards have committed to ensure the £105 million project is underwritten.

FA Board member and chairman of the National Football Centre Board David Sheepshanks said: “St. George’s Park will be a world class facility providing; and an inspirational hub for everyone involved in football from the grassroots to elite.

“St. George’s Park will be accessible to all, aspirational, educational, sustainable and iconic; a truly national centre for our national game, in the heart of England.”

Sheepshanks added that coaches trained directly and indirectly through St George’s Park will have the capacity to reach seven million participants in local communities, a statistic sure to benefit local sports retailers and other related professions working at a grass roots level.

Sheepshanks said: “After extensive consultation we know there is enormous support for the project from all parts of the game. St. George’s Park will be the hub to a workforce of 1,400 FA Coach Educators, who in turn will train in the region of 250,000 coaches by 2018.
