Running: Brooks in a Trance
Brooks Running sales manager Martin Exley tells SGB Sports about the company’s latest running innovations, and how they have been integrated to its new Trance 10 running shoe.
Now in its 10th year, the Trance range is Brooks’ flagship support shoe. With our ranges being categorised as ‘good’, ‘better’ and ‘best’; the Trance 10 sits firmly under the ‘best’ banner.
But as we know, runners love their equipment and want to learn everything there is to know about it. So why not start with the manufacturing process?
Until a running shoe is ready to leave the factory, many technological details need to be assembled into one functioning product. This is usually a process that produces considerable amounts of waste materials, which is why Brooks is constantly developing new ideas on how to minimise this waste, and be more careful with resources. The BioMoGo midsole is a result of one of these ideas, putting Brooks at the cutting edge of environmentally-friendly technology. BioMoGo midsoles biodegrade 50 times faster than conventional athletic shoe midsoles and allow Brooks to save nearly 30 million pounds of landfill waste over a 20-year period. Trance was the first shoe in the Brooks range to take on this new technology, back in 2008.
Brooks has also introduced DNA, an adaptive damping system where the fluid adjusts itself directly to the biomechanical conditions. Depending on the speed and weight, the runner receives more or less damping and attributed energy and can therefore unroll optimally.
Trance shoes now feature this technology also, as well as a progressive diagonal rollbar (PDRB), a tri-density midsole biomechanically engineered to allow for progressive pronation control and to create smoother transitions from the midstance phase into the propulsion phase. The diagonal rollbar is a high density post at the medial arch which acts along the same way as the PDRB.
The Trance 10 has had a highly technical makeover with the introduction of full-length DNA in the sole. The DNA compound is based on a non-Newtonian fluid; that is a fluid that reacts differently according to the force that is put into it. So a heavier runner will get a different cushioning reaction from a lighter run. It truly is a shoe with adaptability for the individual wearer.
The level of support is carefully tailored, and has incredibly comfortable upper materials. Other features include a podular outsole for an exceptional ride, an elasticated ghillie lace system for a comfortable snug fit around the top of the foot and even a little extra tongue stay that Brooks has christened ‘tongue tied’.
The Trance 10 is now a shoe that will allow retailers to offer a plusher version of the award-winning globally renowned GTS11. The stability offering on the Trance 10 is that of the GTS11 but with the added extra of full-length DNA.
