Barefoot footwear brand donates 1,000 pairs of running shoes to student fundraising event
Newton Running has donated 1,000 shoes to a charity shoe drive to raise awareness of orphans in Kenya.
The Soles for Kenya ‘shoe-raiser’ was organised by four high schools Denver, Colorado and collected 1,000 pairs of trainers. Newton Running agreed to match the number of pairs of shoes collected with the same number of pairs of high-performance running shoes for adolescent and teenage orphans.
The shoes will be distributed by Eunice Kariuki, founder and executive director of Tumaini, a Kenyan home for orphans, to local orphanages and street kids in Nairobi, Kenya.
The official Facebook page for Soles for Kenya reads: “There are an estimated two million orphans in Kenya alone. These kids are the tragic legacy of the AIDS pandemic, drought, tribal warfare, malaria, starvation, and poverty.”
A Newton Running statement read: “Aside from supplying much-needed footwear to Kenyan orphans, their goal is to raise awareness for the 2.5 million orphans living with the legacy of the AIDS pandemic: poverty, drought, starvation and tribal warfare.
“The Denver teenagers were touched by Tumaini’s cause and wanted to expand the circle of care for African orphans.”
