It’s the right decision to call off the England game but I do despair

There’s no doubt in my mind that the decision by the FA to call off the England friendly with the Netherlands tomorrow (August 10) is the right decision.

With the unprecedented levels of unrest and violence on the streets of the capital, the resources required from the emergency services to patrol and manage an international game would be better deployed elsewhere, especially given what was seen on Monday night.

It was with shock that I watched the fire rip through Croydon and turn a building into a smouldering pile of rubble in very little time at all. I have experience working in the construction industry, but I was shocked, and a little dismayed, at the speed with which the fire took hold and destroyed that building.

I have friends and family from that part of the world, as I’m sure many of you do, and live quite close to Woolwich myself, which has been described as a ‘war zone’ today.

The looting of JD shops amongst all the other stores is also deplorable and I hope that all those silly enough to have been swept up in what is simply a wave of crime, violence and thuggery are caught and given the correct punishment to suit their crime.

What that is I can’t say, but as an avid users of Facebook and Twitter I know many of the communities in and around London, from those directly affected to those on the periphery, are a lot more angry than I.

And as someone rightly said yesterday on the news, it may seem like a good idea to join in with a crowd of 150-200 others, but when the dust has settled, arrests are made and people look for those culpable, it won’t seem like such a good idea.

Until next time,
