Summer might be gone, but Christmas is just around the corner

With the summer drawing to a close, it means we are now heading towards autumn, dark evenings and the realisation that Christmas is but a few paydays away. Hopefully you’ll all experience a welcome boost over the coming months as Christmas draws closer and business, fingers crossed, increases.

We’ve included a Christmas products showcase in this issue that focuses on merchandise and point-of-sale products that could bring a few extra pounds your way.

Sport remains a popular pastime, particularly football, so there’s the opportunity to cash-in on the desire for official, branded merchandise from dyed-in-the-wool supporters, franchise fans and their wider friends and family that are looking for gifts that they know will be liked and appreciated.

And, as I’ve said before, while garden gnomes and dog bowls might not be the sports retailer’s preserve, there’s plenty more products to stock that can be used to grab the attention of your customers.

From mini, in-car boxing gloves to football action figures, there’s something for everyone and for every budget. Steering clear of player and sportsmen focused items is a good way to maximise your exposure to the market and many of the products are simply emblazoned with a club crest so extending their shelf life. After all, a nodding dog’s not just for Christmas. Plus, having spoken to the merchandise trade (see SGB Sports August), the margins are pretty good too.

My personal favourite of the products we’ve showcased is the rugby themed Mr Potato Head. And with the 2011 Rugby World Cup just around the corner, it’s sure to prove a hit with rugby fans too.

Until next time,

David Pittman, editor, SGB Sports
