Former Catalina basketball player Jesse Simpson named University of Redlands assistant
Former Catalina Standout jesse simpson was named assistant coach at the University of Redlands this week. Simpson played at Fitchburg State University and Spain while serving as an assistant coach at Pusch Ridge until 2021. Simpson was an assistant coach at Westminster College in Salt Lake City after Pusch Ridge.
The Bulldogs compete at the NCAA Division III level.
Former St. Augustine baseball players Alex Gamez and Pabel Martinez are next level
Alex Gamez (New Mexico JC) was a utility player with St. Augustine where he hit .408 with 21 RBI while tallying 59 strikeouts on the mound in 37 innings of work as a senior. Gamez joins former Sunnyside player Gerard Grijalva on the Thunderbird list.
Paul Martinez (Adams State) hit .354 as a senior 12 RBI and 6 doubles. Martinez joins former Tucson player Orlando Romeroformer Rincon/UHS standout Villa Alfredo and former Flowing Wells star Caleb Raney on the Grizzly list.
Former Ironwood Ridge and Arizona star Jaclyn Inclan passes 2,000 career assists
Former Ironwood Ridge Smuggler Jaclyn Inclan had over 1,000 career assists with Chicago State. Inclan made her debut for the University of Arizona Beach team after high school before moving to New Mexico to play indoors where she recorded 1,182 assists. She now has 1,390 assists with the Cougars.
Former Tucson High star Summer Avery retires from professional volleyball
summer avery played indoor and beach volleyball at San Jose State and California Baptist after winning Southern Arizona Player of the Year with the Badgers in 2013. Avery then played for Lemesos Volleyball in Cyprus (2019-2022) where she was also a coach. Lemesos was elevated to the First Division under Avery’s management.
Named one of “Arizona’s Heart & Sol” by KOLD and Casino del Sol, Andy Morales was recognized by the AIA as Top High School Reporter in 2014, he received the Ray McNally Award in 2017 and AZ Education Recognition News in 2019. He coached youth, high school and college for over 30 years. He was the first in Arizona to write about high school beach volleyball and high school girl wrestling and his unique perspective can only be found here and on AZPreps365.com. Andy is a Southern Arizona voting member of the Ed Doherty Award, recognizing Arizona’s top football player, and he was named local hero by the Tucson Weekly for 2016. Andy was made an Honorary Flowing Wells Caballero in 2019, became a member of the Sunnyside Los Mezquites Cross Country Hall of Fame in 2021, and he was a member of the Amphi COVID-19 Blue Ribbon Committee.
