Rupinder Pal Singh, captain of the Indian team for the Asian Cup

India has named a 20-member squad for the upcoming Men’s Asian Cup of Hockey, to be held in Jakarta, Indonesia, from May 23 to June 1. This is a World Cup qualifier, and will see hosts India, Japan, Pakistan and Indonesia in Pool A with Malaysia, Korea, Oman and Bangladesh in the hen b.

India are the defending champions and will be led by Rupinder Pal Singh with Birendra Lakra as vice-captain. There are up to 10 players making their first Indian senior team including jr. World Cup players Yashdeep Siwach, Abhisek Lakra, Manjeet, Vishnukant Singh and Uttam Singh. Mareeswaren Sakthivel, Sheshe Gowda BM, Pawan Rajbhar, Abharan Sudev and S Karthi will also be new to the team. Junior World Cup players Maninder Singh and Nilam Sanjeep Xess have been named as substitutes while Pawan, Pardeep Singh, Ankit Pal and Angad Bir Singh have been named as substitutes.

Speaking about the squad composition, coach BJ Kariappa said: “The squad is a good mix of experienced senior players and newcomers, many of whom have played internationally in different age group matches but haven’t made their senior debut in India. Since India have already qualified for the FIH Men’s World Cup as hosts, this will be a good platform for us to try out this new group and test how these players are using this opportunity.”

Former India captain and two-time Olympian Sardar Singh who will also coach the team said: “It’s a very talented group of players and I’ve seen them work very hard over the past few weeks. to earn a spot in the team. On a personal level, this will be my first tournament as India’s coach and I’m looking forward to this new experience,” Sardar said.
