In most cases, products that attempt to create the feeling of being behind the wheel of a conventionally designed automobile do not. Fortunately, that couldn’t be further from the truth when it comes to the NOMOS Autobahn Neomatik 41 Date. One glance at the midnight blue dial of the watch is enough to send you visions of speedometers and tachometers rapidly rising through your head. At this point, you’d be forgiven for thinking that this watch was only an automobile tribute – but you’d be wrong. We have spent a week with the Autobahn Neomatik 41 Date, and can say for sure that it is so much more.
Of the brand
âThe moon and stars shine, as do the street lights – and the superluminova on this watch. The elongated date window and flowing curve of the dial are entirely new. The color of this Autobahn watch is obvious: midnight blue. Perhaps it is. Can a wristwatch give you confidence? It is certainly possible.
What we like
NOMOS is known for making watches with a distinctive Bauhaus style, and this defining characteristic is something we adore. Like other NOMOS watches we’ve spent time with, the Autobahn Neomatik 41 Date exhibits incredible attention to detail, thoughtful construction and functionality, and a handful of unique touches that make it unmistakably NOMOS.
You’d be hard-pressed not to immediately notice the semi-circular superluminova inlay from the indexes. In dim lighting, it glows a bright blue hue, making it easy to read the time between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m. (when you probably have less light available to read your watch.
In addition to the superluminova, the enlarged date window is a dial accent that sets the Autobahn Neomatik 41 Date apart. Not only is it unique in that it displays both the calendar date and the days following and before it, but it is also much more outside the dial, compared to other watches. NOMOS attributes this to the new construction of the Neomatik caliber on which the watch runs (an automatic DUW 6101 with a 42-hour power reserve). Our tester found it easier to set the extended date window with the current date in the center position, but also noted that it could easily be set as left or right justified if that suited his preferences.
But that’s not just what is to the dial that deserves to be mentioned. The dial itself is also worth a look. When it reaches the case at the edges, the dial tilts gently upward. It is reminiscent of the enamel gauge clusters of classic British sports cars and also adds depth and dimension to the watch face. It is pleasing to the eye when looking at the time and also shows the ability of NOMOS to execute unique and intricate designs with its dials.
The automotive influence also extends to the second and minute hands, where a race-inspired red color sprinkles the tip of the minute hand and covers the entire sub-second hand (this red is also found in the “neomatik” splashed under the manufacturer’s nameplate).
We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the highway strap as well. Where many manufactures pay little attention to the arena, NOMOS extends its design expertise and attention to detail to the textile bracelet. It is made exclusively for NOMOS in France and is extremely comfortable.
Who is it for
Although the watch is inspired by the world of classic automobiles, you don’t have to be a âgas freakâ to enjoy it. Like every other NOMOS timepiece, the Autobahn Neomatik 41 Date is understated and elegant. It goes with cuffed denim, a t-shirt and sneakers as well as a stylish gray suit and cordovan shell oxfords. And that’s where its beauty lies – it just might be the perfect watch for 2021 and beyond, where versatility and flexibility are paramount.
NOMOS postulates that the Autobahn Neomatik 41 Date can inspire confidence, and we should agree. There is a certain air that comes from knowing that you have a watch on your wrist that is so unique. During testing, we received more than a few comments from curious viewers in the vein of “What kind of watch is this?” It’s a great feeling, and one that alone justifies the price of the watch. But beyond anything else, the main takeaway from the Autobahn Neomatik 41 Date is that it is incredibly refined and could find its place on the wrist of anyone who appreciates design and attention to detail. .
